Canggu is a surf-and-cafe coast on flatter ground, with a deep stock of pool villas and a social life close to the gate. Uluwatu is the Bukit: cliffs, views, stairs, and a drive between almost everything you will want to do. What each coast feels like starts at Bali areas, then Canggu and Uluwatu. Hiring someone to cook is a later step. It does not decide the coast.

Beaches for a group, not a postcard
Canggu's draw is the surf beaches: Batu Bolong, Echo and Pererenan, close to cafes and often rough in a shore break. Weak swimmers and small children should treat them as a walk and use the pool. That is a normal week there.
Padang Padang and Bingin mean stairs, reef and swell. They are a poor default if you want to wander down and float. Melasti has more sand and still needs a drive and a swell check. If everyone must swim in the sea before lunch, say so before you book a cliff photo. On many Bukit weeks the pool is the daily swim.
Group logistics
Canggu lets people split up. Cafes and errands are closer, so two can leave while the others stay at the pool. The cost is traffic, especially late afternoon, and a louder lane than the photos suggested. Ask about 8am and 9pm on that street.
Uluwatu moves as a carload. Beach access and errands are a plan. Four different lunches means a driver, or lunch at the house. That suits a reunion which would otherwise fragment. It frustrates a group that expects to wander, and a scooter on the Bukit after dark is not a neutral plan.
Nightlife, or the cliff
In Canggu a pool afternoon and a lively evening can happen without an expedition. That proximity is the point for many groups of friends. It also leaks: a house beside a venue is not the same week as Pererenan or Berawa. Pick the pocket on purpose.
Uluwatu's sunset spots are a trip from many villas. You go, you watch, you leave. You do not stroll home. The rest of the night is the house. Choose that on purpose. A sunset photo is not an 11pm plan without a driver.
Villa stock
Canggu, Berawa and Pererenan have enough group villas that you can reject a loud road and still have options. Some lanes became cafe streets after the photos. Be picky about noise and bathrooms.
On the Bukit the photo is often why you book, and the stairs are what you notice on night one. Ask which bedrooms share a level with the kitchen and the pool. Three flights will not feel easy by day three. In either area, inspect the kitchen only if you will actually cook in.
Travel time, without the fantasy
From Ngurah Rai, plan 45 to 90 minutes to Canggu, longer late in the day, and 40 to 80 minutes towards Uluwatu, Bingin or Ungasan before the last steep road. Between the coasts, plan 90 minutes to two and a half hours. A morning swim in one and a sunset in the other is a day in the car. Compare the two villas at the hour you land, not as area averages.
Who should choose Canggu
Choose Canggu when the week should be easy to leave and easy to come back to.
- People will surf, or at least want the beach and a cafe in the same morning.
- The group likes to split up, which only works if food and errands are close.
- Evenings can be social without a planned excursion.
- You will use the pool as the calm swim and the beach as the scenery.
- You will judge the street, not the word Canggu. Berawa and Pererenan are often the practical version of the same choice.
Canggu is a weaker fit when the non-negotiable is quiet nights and a view, or when the airport drive at your landing hour is already more than a tired group will tolerate. Once villas are shortlisted, read Canggu. The hub for the other coasts is Bali areas.
Who should choose Uluwatu
Choose Uluwatu when the house is the holiday and the cliff is why you came.
- The group is happy to stay in for most meals and most swims.
- A view matters more than walking to coffee.

- Sunset is a planned outing with a driver.
- You will not bolt a Canggu night onto the same evening.
Uluwatu is a weaker fit for a group that gets restless in a beautiful house, or for anyone who needs a flat beach walk every morning. Those needs belong on the wider family guide. Neighbourhood context, once you are serious, is Uluwatu.
What the comparison leaves out
- Seminyak, when you want more restaurants and spas on the south-west side without Canggu's surf-town rhythm.
- Sanur, when a flat promenade sets the pace. That is a different pair of coasts.
- Ubud, when the week is rice fields and the beach is optional.
- Nusa Dua and Jimbaran, when you want resort facilities more than a cliff or a cafe street.
- One special dinner's atmosphere. If that is the only decision left, use the dinner-night guides at the top.
- Who cooks, and at what rate. This article will not rank coasts by kitchen.
Meals, after the coast is chosen
Pick the villa first. Breakfast and dinner at the house is a different product from one celebration and restaurants the rest of the week. That split is a full-day stay or a single catering night, on either coast.
Hire pages stay secondary. On a standard stay, travel is included for Canggu, Seminyak, Kerobokan, Berawa and Pererenan.
