Bali Private Chef Costs: Groceries, Tax & Tipping Explained
The hidden line items of a Bali private chef booking — groceries at cost, the ++ (tax and service charge), and tipping norms explained. Updated 2026.

Private chef pricing in Bali is only confusing when quotes mix day rates, per-person menus, unmarked groceries and silent “++” charges. This 2026 guide states how myCHEF prices daily villa chef hire, what groceries really cost, how tax and service work, and how tipping usually happens — so you can budget before you message anyone.
If you want the product view first, open pricing or private chef service. For area logistics, pair this with our Ubud, Seminyak and Canggu journal guides.
The 2026 model: priced by meals, not vague “half days”
Our standard holiday villa hire is meal-count based. You book how many meals the chef + assistant cook and serve per day. That replaces older half-day / full-day ladders that were hard to compare.
- One meal a day — IDR 1,000,000++ per day (breakfast or lunch or dinner)
- Two meals a day — IDR 1,800,000++ per day (any two)
- Three meals a day — IDR 2,700,000++ per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner)
Included in the service fee: professional chef and assistant, menu planning for the booking, cooking, service of those meals, and kitchen cleanup for the service. Not included: groceries (see below), premium event staffing, specialty rentals, or separate catering formats for large parties.
What “++” means in rupiah
In Bali hospitality, ++ means government tax and service are added on top of the published rate:
- 10% service charge
- 11% government tax
- Combined multiplier: × 1.21 on the base figure
Examples on standard daily rates:
- IDR 1,000,000++ → about IDR 1,210,000 all-in service fee
- IDR 1,800,000++ → about IDR 2,178,000 all-in
- IDR 2,700,000++ → about IDR 3,267,000 all-in
Every proposal should show base, ++ components, and the total before you pay a deposit. If a quote only says a round number with no tax note, ask.
Weekly and monthly discounts
Length-of-stay discounts apply to the meal-plan day rate:
- Weekly (7+ days) — 10% off daily rates → IDR 900,000++ / 1,620,000++ / 2,430,000++ for 1 / 2 / 3 meals
- Monthly (28+ days) — 20% off daily rates → IDR 800,000++ / 1,440,000++ / 2,160,000++ for 1 / 2 / 3 meals
These are the right tools for expats, remote workers, long family villas and multi-week wellness stays. Compare coverage models in live-in vs daily service if you need a chef living on site rather than visiting on a schedule.
Groceries: at cost, with receipts
Food is not buried inside a mystery per-person fee on daily hire. Groceries are billed at cost with receipts — no markup. That keeps incentives clean: we recommend what tastes best for your brief, not what hides margin in a protein swap.
Directional grocery budgets (highly menu-dependent):
- Simple local menus for a couple — often a few hundred thousand rupiah per meal
- Family of four, mixed international menus — plan a wider daily produce and protein spend
- Premium seafood, Wagyu, imported cheese, specialty wine pairings — market prices apply; we flag these before shopping
You can set a grocery ceiling (“keep food around X per day”) and we plan menus inside it. Prefer a fixed per-person catering package for a party night instead? Use villa catering or event menus rather than pure daily hire.
Daily hire vs per-person dining vs event catering
Do not compare unlike products:
- Daily meal hire — flat chef+assistant fee by meal count + groceries at cost. Best for household eating across a stay.
- Occasion / fine dining menus — often structured per guest for multi-course nights; see fine dining and menus.
- Event catering — weddings, birthdays, corporate; staffing and equipment scale with headcount; start at events or wedding packages.
A romantic tasting for two is a different product from three meals a day for a family of six. Both can be excellent value in their lane.
Sample budgets you can actually use
Couple, 7 nights, one dinner + one breakfast most days (two-meal plan on weekly rate):
- Service: IDR 1,620,000++ × 7
- Groceries: set a daily food budget you are comfortable with; pay at cost on receipts
- Optional: one upgraded seafood night inside the same grocery rules
Family of five, full-board week (three-meal weekly rate):
- Service: IDR 2,430,000++ × 7
- Groceries: higher protein volume; kids’ favourites planned ahead
- Often still competes with restaurants once transfers and time are counted
One celebration dinner for 10:
- May be quoted as an occasion menu or catering format rather than a single “one meal” day rate if service staff and courses expand
- Ask for itemised staffing if you want waiters or bar
Deposit, balance and cancellation
- 50% deposit confirms the booking and holds your chef and date
- Balance is due as stated on the proposal (typically the day before service for events)
- Cancellation — full refund 14+ days before; 50% refund 7–13 days before; non-refundable under 7 days (see cancellation policy)
Never pay a large cash amount without a written scope: dates, meal plan, ++ treatment, grocery policy, and who is cooking.
Tipping norms for private chefs in Bali
Service charge on the invoice is not the same as a personal tip. Norms are flexible:
- Not mandatory when service charge is already billed, but always appreciated for exceptional care
- Daily hire multi-day stays — many guests tip the team at the end of the booking in cash
- Single special dinner — a tip for chef and assistant (and waiters if present) is a common thank-you
- How much — there is no fixed rule; think in terms of gratitude relative to stay length and complexity, not a restaurant percentage script
Hand tips directly to the team when possible, or ask the captain to distribute if you prefer one envelope.
Hidden costs to watch on any Bali chef quote
- Travel fees not disclosed until final invoice
- Grocery markup disguised as “package inclusions”
- Mandatory equipment rental you did not approve
- Tax appearing only at payment time
- Chef-only rate that quietly excludes the assistant you need for service pace
myCHEF’s published meal plans include chef + assistant for daily hire. Event quotes list staffing lines so you can see the full picture. Help pages: pricing help.

FAQ — private chef cost Bali 2026
How much does a private chef cost per day in Bali in 2026?
myCHEF daily hire is IDR 1,000,000++ for one meal, IDR 1,800,000++ for two meals, and IDR 2,700,000++ for three meals (chef + assistant). Weekly −10%, monthly −20%. Groceries are extra at cost with receipts.
Is food included in the day rate?
No on daily hire. The day rate is labour and service. Ingredients are shopped for your menus and billed at cost with receipts — no markup.
What does ++ mean on a chef invoice?
++ adds 11% government tax and 10% service charge (×1.21 on the base amount). Ask for the all-in total before you pay the 50% deposit.
Are there cheaper private chef options in Bali?
Yes — freelance rates vary widely. Compare what is included (assistant, cleanup, food safety, backup chef if illness). The lowest labour number is not always the lowest stress number.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes. A 50% deposit confirms the booking. Balance timing and cancellation tiers are written on the proposal and summarised on our cancellation page.
Want numbers for your dates? Share meal plan, guest count and villa area via quote. We will reply with a clear 2026 proposal — service fee, grocery policy, tax treatment and deposit — without guesswork.
