Is a private chef worth it for a short Bali stay?

When a full-day private chef is worth it on a two to five night Bali stay, when one catered dinner fits better, and a worked example using published rates.

Poolside villa breakfast in Bali with carry-on luggage by the terrace door

A private chef is worth it on a short Bali stay when you plan to eat most meals at the villa, the group is close to ten people, and the kitchen can take it. It is usually not worth it if you want one special dinner and plan to eat out the rest of the time. In that case, book the dinner as catering. A full day of staff is the wrong unit for a single meal.

This page is about stays of roughly two to five nights. For longer stays, the decision is more about continuity, and live-in versus daily service covers it. For the difference between the two booking models, see stay chef or catering. Current prices are on pricing.

What you are actually buying

At myCHEF, a private chef for your stay means a full day of staff: a chef and an assistant, for about ten guests, with three flexible meals. Each meal can be breakfast, lunch or dinner. The team plans the menu, shops, cooks and cleans up. Groceries are billed separately at cost, with receipts. The day rate is the same whether the group is four people or ten. The details are on the full-day stay-chef page.

One lunch, one dinner or one party is a different purchase: catering, priced per guest with food included in the menu. Knowing which one you are buying is most of the "is it worth it" question.

Decision table: trip length, guests, space and inclusions

Your situationA full-day chef tends to be worth itSomething else tends to fit better
Trip lengthTwo to five nights with most meals planned at the villaOne or two nights, or a trip built around restaurants
Meals at the villaTwo or three a day, most daysOne special dinner. Book that dinner as catering
Group sizeSix to ten people, where the day rate is shared widelyA couple who mostly eat out. The day rate does not shrink for two
Guest needsYoung children, older guests, strict diets or allergies that make going out hardEveryone is happy to eat anywhere, any time
Arrival and departureA late arrival or early flight where a meal at the villa saves a scramblePlenty of time and energy to go out on both days
Kitchen and spaceA working hob, oven, fridge space and a table for everyoneA kitchenette or no oven. A catered menu or dining out may suit better
What you want includedMenu planning, shopping, cooking and cleanup, every dayJust the food on one night, or just breakfast from the villa staff

If most of your rows land in the left column, a stay chef is likely to feel good value. If most land on the right, book the one meal you care about and keep the rest of the trip simple.

Worked example: three nights, eight adults

These figures are illustrative. They use the rates published on pricing on 27 September 2026 and show the arithmetic, not a quote. Prices marked ++ exclude the 10% service charge and 11% government tax, both applied to the same base, which is how the published all-in figures are calculated. Travel depends on the villa area.

Option A: three full days of stay chef.

  • Service fee: 3 days x IDR 2,700,000++ = IDR 8,100,000++ (IDR 9,801,000 all-in).
  • That covers nine meals for the group: three a day.
  • Per guest per day, the service fee is IDR 337,500++ before groceries.
  • Groceries are extra, at cost with receipts, and depend on the menu.

Option B: one villa dinner, eat out the rest of the time.

  • A villa dinner from IDR 850,000++ per guest (three-course, minimum five guests): 8 x IDR 850,000++ = IDR 6,800,000++ (IDR 8,228,000 all-in).
  • Food is included. That covers one meal.
  • Every other meal is a restaurant bill, plus the transport and time to get there.

The two options are not the same purchase. Option A buys nine meals of staff time with food on top. Option B buys one food-inclusive dinner. The honest question is not "which is cheaper" but "how many meals do we actually want at the villa?" If the answer is one, choose B. If it is most of them, A is doing much more work for the money.

When it is usually worth it

  • Families with small children. Meals on the children's clock, at the villa, without a restaurant wait.
  • Groups arriving tired. A first-night dinner and a breakfast that is simply there.
  • Strict diets or allergies. One team shopping and cooking for the brief, rather than explaining it to a new kitchen every night.
  • A celebration inside a short stay. The chef covers the daily meals, and the special dinner can be planned as one of them or stacked as a separate catering night.
  • Villas far from restaurants. In quieter areas, every meal out is a drive.

When it usually is not

  • One-night stops. A single day rate for one evening and one breakfast is rarely the best use of it.
  • Restaurant-led trips. If the plan is to try somewhere new every night, the chef would be cooking breakfast only.
  • Kitchens that cannot support it. We check the villa kitchen before confirming. If it is a kitchenette, a catered menu or eating out may be the better call.
  • Villas with a capable included cook and simple needs. Breakfast and an easy lunch from the villa team may be enough. The split is explained in private chef vs villa staff.

Alternatives for a short stay

  • Catering for one dinner, lunch or party with food included.
  • A floating breakfast for one morning that feels like an occasion.
  • A villa BBQ for a relaxed group night.
  • A mix: one or two stay-chef days around the busiest part of the trip, and restaurants either side.

FAQ

Is there a minimum number of days?
The minimum is one full day of staff with three flexible meals. For just one meal, book catering.

Does the day rate go down for two people?
No. It is the same for the full-day team, which is why a stay chef is better value for larger groups or for couples who want most meals in.

Can one of the three meals be a celebration dinner?
Each of the three daily meals can be breakfast, lunch or dinner. If the celebration needs a bigger menu or extra staff, say so in the brief so it can be quoted.

How do we confirm?
You receive a written proposal first. A 50% deposit confirms the date. Read the cancellation terms before paying.
