Self-catering or a villa chef for your Bali stay?
Self-catering or a villa chef in Bali? Compare shopping, cooking, cleanup, groceries and day rates, and see how to mix chef days into a self-catered stay.

Self-catering in a Bali villa is cheapest on paper, while a full-day chef costs more but gives you back the shopping, cooking and washing up. Compare full-day villa chef rates with your own time and group size before you decide. For many groups the answer is a mix: cook simple meals yourself and book the chef for the meals that matter most.
This guide sets out what self-catering really involves in a villa, what a full-day chef takes off your plate, how the costs compare, and the middle options in between.
- Self-catering means shopping, cooking and cleaning up yourself in an unfamiliar kitchen.
- A full-day chef team is IDR 2,700,000++ per day before groceries.
- For six people that is about IDR 450,000 each for the day before food.
- Groceries are at cost with receipts either way.
- You can mix: the 3 meals of a full-day package can be used on different days.
What self-catering in a Bali villa involves
Most villas have a kitchen, and cooking for yourself is a real option. In practice it means finding markets and supermarkets, working out local ingredients, cooking in a kitchen you do not know, and washing up after every meal. On a short holiday, that time comes out of the pool, the beach and the day trips.
It works best for small groups who enjoy cooking, eat simply, and plan to eat out often.
What a full-day chef takes off your plate
The full-day booking covers a chef and a dedicated assistant for about 10 guests. It includes:
- Menu planning around your tastes and allergies.
- Grocery sourcing and market runs.
- Cooking, plating and table service.
- Full kitchen cleanup after every meal.
You get three meals in the day, and you choose which: breakfast, lunch or dinner. We check your villa kitchen before confirming. We arrive with the team, not a full catering kit, so the villa kitchen does the work. Our chefs page introduces the team.

Groceries either way
You pay for food whether you cook or not. With a chef, groceries are charged at cost with every receipt handed over. As a guide, the private chef page estimates about IDR 250,000 to 400,000 in groceries for one dinner for a couple, and about IDR 600,000 to 1,000,000 for two meals for a family of six, depending on protein and kids plates. Premium items such as imported meat are approved with you first.

The middle ground
You do not have to choose one or the other for the whole stay. The minimum chef booking is 3 meals, and they can be used on different days, so you could have two dinners early in the trip and one later. For one dinner without staff, drop-off catering delivers prepared dishes with printed reheating and plating notes, and you serve yourself privately. For a short trip, read whether a chef is worth it for a weekend.
How to mix chef days into your stay
- List the meals you most want to enjoy without cooking, usually dinners.
- Keep simple breakfasts and snacks for yourself.
- Book the chef for those meals, using the 3 meals across different days if you like.
- Tell us allergies and diets at the first message.
