Can a private chef cater a villa party with more than 50 guests?
Catering a Bali villa party for 50+ guests: which formats work, buffet and BBQ rates per guest, a 60-guest worked example, villa checks and lead times.

Yes, a villa party with more than 50 guests can be fully catered at home, but it is a catering job, not a private chef job. One chef can cook beautifully for a table of ten. Fifty or more guests need a kitchen team, a service team, the right equipment and a plan for how food reaches people while it is still hot. Before you read on, have a look at our catering formats for large villa parties, because the format you pick decides most of the price and the setup.
This guide explains which formats work at 50 guests and above, what the published rates are, what we check at the villa, and what to send us so we can quote quickly.
- Above 50 guests, plan a catering team rather than one private chef.
- Buffets for 50 to 99 guests start at IDR 450,000++ per guest; BBQ starts at IDR 700,000++ per guest.
- 100 guests or more receive a custom proposal.
- Team size and equipment are sized in your quote, based on the menu, the villa and the service style.
- At least 3 to 5 days’ notice, ideally a few weeks for this size. A 50% deposit confirms the date.
Why is 50 guests different from a dinner for ten?
A private chef dinner works because one chef controls every plate. At 50 guests that model breaks. A home kitchen cannot hold enough food at the right temperature, one person cannot serve a crowd, and plates for 50 take far longer to come out than guests want to wait.
So for large villa parties we bring a catering team: chefs who cook, a service team that runs the buffet or the grill and keeps tables clear, and the equipment the villa kitchen does not have. The exact number of people and pieces of equipment is sized in your quote. It depends on the menu, how many stations you want, the layout of the villa and how long the party runs.
Which formats work best for 50 guests or more?
Three formats do most of the work at this size. You can also combine them, for example a grazing table as guests arrive, then a buffet or BBQ for the main meal.
| Format | Best for | Published starting rate (50 to 99 guests) |
|---|---|---|
| Indonesian buffet | Relaxed parties, mixed ages, easy dietary options | IDR 450,000++ per guest |
| International buffet | Mixed groups who want familiar dishes | IDR 550,000++ per guest |
| Live stations | Parties where the food is part of the show | IDR 750,000++ per guest |
| BBQ (Indonesian, International or Surf & Turf) | Pool and garden parties, sunset gatherings | From IDR 700,000++ per guest |
| Babi guling | A Balinese centrepiece for a celebration (contains pork) | From IDR 525,000++ per guest; over 100 quoted |
Buffet rates include food, chef, service team, buffet equipment, setup and cleanup. BBQ includes food, chef, service team and cleanup, and the grill is included for groups of about 15 guests or more, so it is always included at this size. Normal groceries are part of the per-guest price; premium upgrades such as lobster or wagyu are quoted separately.
Plated dinners are possible for formal evenings, but they need far more service time and space per guest. For a party, a buffet or BBQ is usually the calmer choice. If you want a seated, served dinner for a large group, tell us and we will advise honestly on what the villa can handle.
“At fifty guests the food is only half the job. The other half is getting it to every guest hot, on time and without queues.”
What does a 60-guest villa party cost?
Here are two worked examples at published rates for 60 guests, in an area where travel is included (Canggu, Seminyak, Kerobokan, Berawa and Pererenan). Elsewhere a travel fee is itemised in your quote before you confirm.
| Indonesian buffet | International BBQ | |
|---|---|---|
| Rate per guest | IDR 450,000++ | IDR 850,000++ |
| 60 guests before tax and service | IDR 27,000,000 | IDR 51,000,000 |
| With 11% tax and 10% service | IDR 32,670,000 | IDR 61,710,000 |
| 50% deposit to confirm | IDR 16,335,000 | IDR 30,855,000 |
These are starting points. Drinks, a bar team, extra stations, decoration and entertainment are separate, and your written quote shows every line before you pay anything.
What do we check at the villa first?
A large party works when the villa is ready for it. Before we confirm, we ask about:
- Space for the food. Where the buffet line or grill can stand, with room for guests to queue without blocking paths or the pool edge.
- The kitchen and back area. Fridge space, a place to prepare and plate, water and a spot for washing up.
- Power and lighting. Enough sockets for warmers and lights once the sun goes down.
- Access. Where the team can unload and park, and how far equipment needs to be carried.
- Villa rules. Guest limits, music curfews and any rules about open fire or outside caterers.
Many villas have their own limits on guest numbers and noise. Check those with your villa manager early, because they decide how big the party can be before the menu does.
How do you keep 50 or more guests fed without queues?
Most of it is planning. We look at how many people arrive at once and how long the main meal should last, then set the number of buffet lines or stations to match. Splitting the food across two or three points, opening the buffet in stages, or pairing a grill with a cold buffet all help.
It also helps to tell us the shape of the night. A party that starts with drinks and a grazing table, moves to a main meal around 7 pm and ends with dessert and dancing needs a different plan from a long lunch that runs all afternoon.
Planning a party for 50 guests or more?
Send the date, villa area, guest count and the kind of food you have in mind. We will come back with a format, a team plan and an itemised quote.
What should you send us?
- The date, start time and how long the party runs.
- The villa name or area.
- Your guest count, with the number of children.
- The format you like: buffet, BBQ, live stations or a mix.
- Dietary needs: vegetarian, vegan, halal, allergies.
- Anything else you need from us: drinks service, a bar, tables and chairs, decoration.
With that, we can recommend a format, size the team and send a written quote. A 50% deposit confirms the date and the balance is due the day before the event.
How far ahead should you book?
We need at least 3 to 5 days’ notice for any booking, and we do not take same-day bookings. For a party of 50 guests or more, earlier is much better. Teams and equipment for large events are booked per date, and popular dates go first, so a few weeks ahead is a sensible target.
