Cooking-class prices in Bali cover a wide range, and the number you are quoted depends almost entirely on one thing: whether you join a group or book privately. Here is an honest 2026 guide to what a cooking class in Bali actually costs, what drives the price, and how to tell whether a quote is fair.
The two price tiers
Almost every cooking class in Bali fits one of two models:
- Group cooking schools are the budget end. You join a scheduled class with other guests — often ten to twenty-four people — at a fixed venue. Per head, this is the cheapest way to take a class, which is exactly why it suits solo travellers and backpackers.
- Private and in-villa classes cost more per person because you are booking a chef's time exclusively for your group. In exchange you get a custom menu, your own pace, no strangers, and — in the in-villa format — no travel at all.
Neither is "better." They are priced differently because they are different products: a group class is a shared activity; a private class is an exclusive experience.
What drives the price
- Group size and privacy — the single biggest factor. Exclusive use of a chef always costs more per head than a shared bench.
- Length and number of dishes — a 3-hour class costs less than a full half-day of six to eight dishes.
- Location and travel — a fixed school includes its venue; an in-villa class includes the chef travelling to you and shopping beforehand.
- What is actually included — ingredients, a full sit-down meal, recipes, uniforms, a diploma and clean-up all add real value. A cheap "class" that is really a demonstration with a small tasting is cheap for a reason.
- Dietary complexity — full vegan, gluten-free or allergy-safe menus can involve extra sourcing.
What a myCHEF private class costs
Our standard experience is a 3-hour private Indonesian cooking class in your villa, from IDR 700,000 per person (minimum 4 guests). That includes a professional chef, all ingredients, hands-on cooking of four to six dishes, the full sit-down meal of everything you cook, uniforms and hats, a personalised diploma, recipe cards and full clean-up. Prices are quoted ++ (11% government tax + 10% service) on your written proposal, with no line items added afterwards. Longer sessions, extra dishes and special cuisines are quoted on top.
How to tell if a quote is fair
Before comparing two prices, make sure you are comparing the same thing. Ask: Is it hands-on or a demonstration? Do you eat a full meal or just taste? How many people share the class? Is it at a venue or in your villa? Are ingredients, recipes and clean-up included? A private in-villa class will almost always cost more than a group school — the honest question is whether the privacy, custom menu and convenience are worth it to you. We wrote a straight answer here: is a cooking class in Bali worth it?
